The Value of Mercy: A Sufi Tale with Hidden Wisdom
Within the corners of ancient Sufi wisdom lies an enigmatic tale that holds a profound lesson. It is the story of genies trapped in one of the many chambers of hell. These beings, ambiguous in their appearance and purpose, possess a "gray" energy, oscillating between good and evil based on the interpretations or intentions of those who guide them. Here lies the first lesson: energies are neutral, only leaning towards one side when human free will intervenes.
The story unfolds in an intriguing setting:
Ten genies or jinn are chained to the wall, at a safe distance from each other (even in 9th-century Sufi tales, they anticipated anti-COVID safety protocols). They possess an advanced understanding of their time.
A single plate of food and trident-like forks lie before them, just within reach.
Each jinn attempts to skewer the food to bring it to their mouth, but the long forks injure them in the process. Frustration and anger grip the jinns, trapped and left to their fate.
A small jinn discovers the solution while the others lament. It's not about taking the food for oneself, but about skewering it and passing the fork to the neighboring jinn. The forks are designed to feed the other without danger, but if one attempts to take for oneself, the result is painful.
Observing the small jinn, the others understand that, to survive, they must feed their neighbor. This action generates mercy in their troubled souls, and by performing this act, they are eventually liberated over time, once each soul has fulfilled its expiation (or, in other words, repaid its debt to divine justice). This tale reveals the importance of mercy and connection with others on our spiritual journey.
